Choosing the right swaddle for your baby

Choosing the right swaddle for your baby

Posted by Little Mash on

Did you know that swaddling is one of the most effective ways to encourage your baby to sleep? Swaddling mimics the calming and warm sensation of being in the womb. This provides a sense of safety and comfort that baby needs for their transition to life in your home.

However with countless designs on the market, sometimes knowing which swaddle to use can feel overwhelming for many parents. Today I break down our 3 most popular swaddle styles to help you decide which option is right for you and your baby.

Miracle Blanket

The amazing Miracle Blanket is a highly recommended swaddle. It has a unique shape which makes it easy to get the perfect swaddle every time, even in the dark as the Miracle Blanket doesn't have zips, velcro or snaps. It will fit your baby comfortably every time, even as they grow.

Something to consider: A little bit of technique and learning required for use, but once you get the hang of it you are away!

  • One size fits all babies to approx 4 months
  • Designed with handy arm flaps for a secure fit - can be used with arms in or out
  • Can be worn over a sleeping bag for swaddle transition
  • A secure wrap without zips, velcro or snaps

    COST $39.99

Swaddle Up by Love to Dream

Swaddle Up is a zip-up swaddle with wings that allows your baby to sleep in a natural position with their arms up. Why arms up? It is your baby’s natural sleep position and allows your baby to access their hands for self-soothing. Babies often use their hands to settle themselves to sleep, by sucking on their fingers or gently rubbing their cheeks. Medical research suggests that babies sleep better if they are able to self-soothe.

Something to consider: Swaddle Up is not one-size-fits-all and you will need to purchase additional sizes as your baby grows. Keep that in mind when budgeting.

    • Unique wings allow natural arms up position for self soothing
    • Swaddle in seconds, no guess work or special technique required
    • Twin zipper for easy nappy changes
    • No loose layers to kick off during sleep

    COST from $49.99

    Traditional Cotton Wraps

The tried and true, this style has been around for generations! It is essentially a big square of cotton, jersey, knit or muslin fabric used to wrap your babe like a burrito.

Opt for something with a decent amount of stretch such as a cotton blend to ensure you can get the swaddle nice and snug. We suggest you avoid using muslin - while it may look and feel lovely, we find it just doesn't wrap tight enough for a secure hold. Save these to use as a capsule and pram cover or a light blanket.

Something to consider: A little bit of technique and learning required for use, but once you get the hang of it you are away!

    • Bang for your buck! Multi-purpose item, can also be used as a burp cloth, play mat, capsule cover and change mat in a pinch
    • Typically one size fits all babies
    • Customise your swaddle to suit your babies preferences - hands up or down

    COST from $44.99
